Protecting Your Child’s Dental Health
We usually begin seeing children for dental treatments around the age of three. At this point, we focus on getting them started on a lifetime of excellent oral health. However, we’ve treated lots of kids and understand that a visit to the dentist can be a little intimidating for them. They’re in an unfamiliar setting and seeing lots of new faces and strange-looking machines – it’s understandable that they’d feel a bit overwhelmed!
We see children starting at three years of age because at this point, they usually have all their baby teeth and their dental development really takes off. Many parents wonder why dental treatment is necessary at such an early age. It is critical for us to protect the health of your child’s baby teeth because they are the building blocks for proper development of permanent teeth.
Preventive Treatments Promote Healthy Teeth
If your child loses a baby tooth too soon, they may have to deal with alignment issues as their permanent teeth begin to appear. Detecting and treating cavities as quickly as possible is essential if we want to preserve the tooth and your child’s long-term oral health. In addition to regular exams, we may also recommend a fluoride treatment to protect and strengthen your child’s teeth.
Dental sealants are another preventive treatment that goes a long way toward promoting a healthy smile. Sealants act as a barrier that protects your child’s teeth from the bacteria that cause cavities. Dr. Amir or Dr. Sunny may recommend sealants if we find that your child’s teeth are prone to cavities or their molars have uneven surfaces and deep grooves.
During these early exams, we also look for any abnormalities we think may cause problems for your child in the future. One thing we check for is problems with the thin band of tissue connecting your child’s upper lip to the gum and also between the tongue and bottom of the mouth. If this band of tissue is too tight, the tongue can’t move freely and will interfere with your child’s speech. This procedure is usually corrected with surgery, but our gentle dental lasers make the procedure easy and comfortable for your child.
