Dental implants: What do they entail?

Updated September 21, 2025

dental implant in Allentown, PA, is a tiny titanium post that is placed surgically in your jawbone and left to heal. Once it does, it functions similarly to a natural tooth root by providing stability for a replacement tooth (crown) or prosthetic, such as an implant denture.

Crowns and fixed dentures attached to implants are called restorations and are connected to the implant after it heals and integrates. The restoration is visible when you smile and can mean any of the following:

  • Custom Dental Crown
  • Custom Fixed Denture
  • Custom Fixed Bridge

Before we place your implant, Dr. Amir and Dr. Sunny will talk to you about the type of restoration that best fits your needs. If we are replacing one tooth, we would recommend a dental crown; if you have multiple missing teeth, we would suggest a dental bridge or full or partial dentures.

What Are the Components of a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is comprised of three pieces (post, abutment, restoration) that work together to provide a complete tooth replacement from root to crown. The dental implant replaces the lost root, and the restoration attaches to the abutment, replacing lost function and forming the visible part of the implant.

What Is the Process for Getting Dental Implant Restorations?

#1 Consultation and Discussion

You and your Allentown Dentist will talk about the type of restoration that best fits your needs. We recommend a crown to replace a single tooth, a bridge to replace a few missing teeth in succession, a partial fixed denture for sporadic tooth loss, and a full fixed denture for complete tooth loss.

#2 Restoration Design

Your dentist designs your restoration after taking careful impressions or measurements. We also ensure that the color, shade, and shape will look natural once we place it in your mouth. This step is especially critical with dentures, and we will take the time to make sure the result meets your expectations.

#3 Restoration Placement

After we fabricate the restoration and your implant has integrated into the jawbone, you return to our dental office for final adjustments and restoration placement over the implant and abutment.

#4 Enjoy Your New Smile

Now that you have a restored smile. It’s time to enjoy it! Eat your favorite foods again and smile with confidence.
