Flossing before brushing? Should I use an over the counter teeth whitener? What toothpaste is really recommended by 4 out of 5 dentists? Here are three questions that you should be asking your Allentown Dentist.

How does whitening toothpaste work and how effective are they?

The common misconception is that whitening toothpaste contains bleach. That’s how they make your t-shirts nice and white that must be how they make your teeth white, right? Well, not necessarily. The common ingredient found in this toothpaste is hydrogen peroxide which is a bleaching substance that helps remove the stains that appear on the surface of your teeth. In general, whitening toothpaste can lighten your teeth by only about one shade. Whereas the light-activated whitening that your local Allentown dentist can provide will lighten your teeth anywhere from three to eight shades lighter.

Flossing - before or after you brush?

iPhone or Android? Star Wars or Star Trek? These hot-button topics seem to be a big source of disagreement for many people. Fortunately, the debate on whether you should floss before or after you brush your teeth doesn’t have to be. According to the American Dental Association, it does not matter when you floss but rather that you ARE flossing. When you floss you remove a film between your teeth called plaque. By flossing regularly you may be able to prevent many dental problems such as cavities and gum disease.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a sturdy and permanent way of replacing missing or weakened teeth. Unlike dentures, implants adhere to your existing bone structure and form a permanent bond. Implants are the most natural-looking way to replace missing teeth. A crown is attached to the implant and is custom made to match your natural teeth. If you think dental implants would be the right choice for you, please reach out to one of your local Allentown dentists to set up a consultation.
