Dental bridges are a common restorative solution for replacing missing teeth. A dental bridge, made up of artificial teeth (also known as “pontics”), is secured in place by dental crowns that are placed on adjacent natural teeth. Bridges offer a sturdy and effective way to fill gaps in your smile.

The Different Types of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges come in various types, each designed to suit different dental needs. Here are a few of the most common types of dental bridges:

  • Traditional. Consists of artificial teeth (pontics) that are anchored by dental crowns on adjacent natural teeth. Effective for replacing one or more missing teeth in a row.
  • Cantilever. For instances in which there’s only one adjacent tooth available for anchoring the bridge. Less common due to the single anchor point.
  • Maryland. Also known as a resin-bonded bridge, a Maryland bridge minimizes the need for reshaping adjacent teeth due to the use of metal or porcelain wings that are bonded to the back of adjacent teeth with a strong adhesive.
  • Implant-supported. Ideal for multiple missing teeth or larger gaps, implant-supported bridges are secured in place using dental implants rather than crowns on natural teeth, and thus offer excellent stability and preserve the integrity of natural teeth.

Are Dental Bridges Removable?

Unlike some dental appliances like dentures, which you can take out for cleaning or during sleep, dental bridges are typically not removable. To create a stable, reliable, and natural-feeling replacement for missing teeth they are bonded or secured in place with dental crowns on the adjacent teeth. In some cases, like with implant-supported bridges, a bridge may be removed for the purpose of cleaning by a dental professional but this is uncommon and only done when absolutely necessary.

The non-removable nature of dental bridges offers several benefits. First, it removes the hassle of daily removal for cleaning and maintenance. Secondly, they provide patients with a sense of confidence in the ability to eat, speak, and smile without hesitation, as they would with natural teeth. Additionally, dental bridges are known for their longevity, typically lasting 10-15 years with proper care and maintenance.
